This sample (below) from a machining center allows you to visually verify micron-level dimensional changes normally impossible to see with the unaided eye.
For testing purposes, Okuma's environmental test chamber was set to model a machine shop with normal temperature changes, that is, about 8°C over the course of 9 hours (a rise from 20°C to 28°C over 4 hours, a constant temperature of 28°C for 1 hour, and a drop to the original 20°C over another 4 hours). Using the test chamber, Okuma machined a row of squares into the face of a sample at 2-µm depth variations for each square. After 2 hours, another row was cut in the same way. After continuing in 2-hour intervals, the sample was machined into the thermal matrix pictured here.
Deviations in Z-axis positioning from thermal deformation in the machine make it possible to clearly see the micron-level deformation in tool paths compared with the starting points. This sample let's the naked eye see the high performance of the MA-400HA machining center with its Thermo-Friendly Concept-based technology. |
